Wet Plate Collodion experiments- Quarter plate with adapters.

You would think that having two weeks off would mean that I had lots of opportunities to get out and do some personal work. Nope. I currently still have 24 assignments to go read and mark and paperwork to prepare for my upcoming lesson observations in two weeks.

But I did manage to get a few wet plate collodion images made to test out one of the two new plate cameras I picked up recently. I have yet to make a plate with the new whole plate camera but I did manage to assemble a back for the new half plate. I have also picked up a few new half plate book style plate holders which came with a few adapters for smaller 4.25×3.0 cm plates. At first I thought that these seemed a bit small, but after cutting a few plates down to some and making a few exposures, I actually really love this small format.

Here is a wet plate collodion tintype taken at Clear View House which does show some darkening at on side which could be a developer issue. hopefully not a silver bath problem.

I did have a nightmare when increasing the volume of my solver bath as after adding some distilled water the bath turned a horrible yellow.green colour. At first I thought I had just ruined a very expensive silver bath, but after a few filters it seemed to clear up and is still working. In the future I will no longer buy distilled water and keep to purified water.

As part of my continuing development of my first year photography students I recently delivered them an iPhone photography assignment. The brief was very open, allowing them creative freedom to approach it any way they liked. The only rule was no manipulation outside of the phone. Any apps could be used, either alone or in combination, but all editing must be done within the camera phone, no photoshop allowed. I have yet to see the final submissions, but from what i have seen in the group critiques, I cannot wait too see the final portfolios! Here is a behind the scenes film from Glenn’s fashion shoot. Credit to the filming goes to Sarah Kathleen Page.

Teaching should be fun and this group really make my job worthwhile.

I have had so much success with this group in only a few short months of teaching them. 3 award winners, 3 published in National magazine and 1 featured as an inspirational student by the local press! If they keep working as hard as they do then there is no limit to what they can achieve in the two years on the course.

This group of 12 first year students embody the approach of being a young emerging professional. Their first year exhibition will be held later this year and I have a feeling it’s going to be something special.

For the last few weeks I have been running one day location portrait Analog photography workshops in Peterborough. As part of the delivery I encourage all students to start using the video capabilities of there digital SLR camera’s. Sarah has fully embraced this idea and is shooting regular films of her own as well as behind the scenes footage of the workshops. Take a look at her film then head on over to her website.

AN AMBITIOUS teenager described by friends as a brilliant role model, has sashayed straight into high fashion after winning the chance to photograph the London catwalks.

Sarah Page, who studies at the Peterborough Media and Journalism centre, in Broadway, and lives at Tate House hostel, in Eastfield, was specially selected to snap the latest trends at London Fashion Weekend, held in Somerset House on Friday.

The 18-year-old won her place in the packed press pit after beating off hundreds of others in a competition to impress the photography specialists Fixation.

Top models dressed by the hottest fashion designers, including Jasper Conran, Holly Fulton and Antipodium, made an exciting change to the strangers Sarah said she snaps every week in Peterborough city centre.

She said: “I had a mixed feeling of nerves and excitement.

“I was suddenly in London, somewhere I’m not very familiar with. I had never been to a fashion show before, let alone something as prestigious as London Fashion Week.

“There I was in my jeans with a large camera bag surrounded by well-dressed fashionable people in designer gear. I felt a little out of place.”

Determined to make the most of her glamorous prize, Sarah took more than a thousand photographs during the 30-minute show, using her trusted Canon 600D SLR camera and a long lens that she borrowed from her college studio.

“It was extremely crowded. The other people in the pit were a lot older than me and they were obviously professional photographers, which was a bit daunting.

“I’m quite small even when wearing heels and I didn’t want my height to hold me back, so I chose to sit at the front of the photographers’ pit.

“I didn’t feel ready at all, but when I began photographing the models and saw how well my photographs were turning out, I really got into the swing of things.

“Near the end of the show, all the photographers went crazy trying to make the most of the last few minutes they had to get a good shot, which was a really overwhelming but exhilarating experience being amongst them.”

Self-taught Sarah used to practise her skills in unremarkable residential streets close to home before she enrolled on her photography course.

She now has her sights set on a career as a high-end photographer or in film making, but not as a celebrity ‘pap’ said the teenager, who attempted to bag some back-stage shots at the London fashion show.

She said: “Despite my nerves, it was a really great experience. I met some lovely photographers and I’d be very happy to do it over again.

“I’ve always been ambitious, but winning this has helped me to realise that if I push myself enough I will go far.

“Now I’m always on the lookout for other competitions that will help me to gain experience, exposure and work for my portfolio.”

Gabriel Van Ingen, who is a commercial photographer and Sarah’s lecturer, called her a diligent and hard working student with a bright future.

He said: “The fact that she won this opportunity that was open to not only students but professional photographers is a reflection, not only of the hard work she puts in, but of the fact that she understands she’s got to put herself out there.”

n To see more of Sarah’s shots from London Fashion Weekend visit her portfolio website www.sarahkathleenpage.co.uk

Peterborough in pictures

A RICH vein of photographic talent has helped capture the changing face of Peterborough over the years.

Sarah Page’s natural shots of people in Peterborough city centre are reminiscent of the everyday images captured by the well-known amateur photographer Chris Porsz.

Sarah Kathleen Page, a 1st year photography student of mine recently made this behind the scenes video of a one day large format camera workshop. When I saw it it totally blew me away, after only a few months of study Sarah and the group as a whole are producing some amazing photography and HDSLR video work!

Check out Sarah’s video and head on over to her website to see more of her work.
